Isaac, He laughs – (יצחק, הוא צוחק) Indepth look at Abraham’s & Sarah’s son’s name.

March 11th, 2012 by Steven Ben-DeNoon

Is there a deeper meaning behind the name of Isaac (יִצְחָק)? Without a doubt Isaac’s name is a prophetic insight for us to glean from. let’s look at the passage that hides this mystery. And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.[ Genesis 17:19] An everlasting covenant no doubt was not established from the natural since with my Jewish brethren for we have been torn apart as a nation on many occasions in our history. Nonetheless there has to be a covenant established and it is one that can only be finalized when an end of sins is made as Gabriel declared through Daniel G-d’s prophet. Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness… [Daniel 9:24]

Yet when we examine Isaac’s name it is of great interest to me for his name means “He laughs” (הוא צוחק) Sarah was way passed the age of bearing children and when the LORD spoke to Abraham about having a son through Sarah, he laughed saying Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? [Genesis 17:17] Even when GOD visits Abraham and Sarah in the form of a man Sarah then laughs within herself at the notion that she would be able to have pleasure with her husband once again as young people, and GOD calls her hand and even though she denies her laughter he assures her that she will bear a son.

The point I wish to bring to you attention is the laughter of both Abraham and Sarah and the fact that GOD intentionally waits until they are stricken beyond the age of bearing children to prove the miracle. Not only does G-d do this with Sarah but in other cases of barrenness too. Isaac fore-shadowed what
would happen with Meshiach Ben-David- the Messiah. Could it be that what we will soon discover as a Jewish people is that this man named Jesus of Nazareth – the one that we have laughed to scorn and have mocked His followers for more than two millenia is the seed that would blessed forever according to the promise made to Abraham? is this why Isaac was thus named “He laughs” because we would laugh at the promised son when He came and reject Him? Isn’t it odd that G-d takes an impossible situation to the carnal mind and makes it possible – two old people having a child. Even the birth of the Seed was an impossibility one that we have laughed at for centuries, but may be after all our only hope.
